How Do Greenhouse Automatic Openers Work?
This is probably one of THE most asked questions we get! These little miracle workers are one of our top recommendations for greenhouse owners and when purchasing a new greenhouse. Imagine the scene: you get to work in a morning, it’s getting warmer by the minute and you realise you’ve forgotten to open your greenhouse door that morning – or – you’re getting into bed at night and realise you’ve forgotten to close the roof vent of your greenhouse. In both cases, you either have to stress your plants out or do the ‘dressing gown dash’ to the greenhouse to close the vents. We all know that keeping the right temperature inside a greenhouse is essential for healthy plant growth. Too much heat can stress plants, while poor ventilation can encourage pests and disease. That’s where automatic greenhouse vent openers come in. A clever, low-maintenance solution that keeps air flowing without the need for electricity or constant supervision.
The Science Behind the Automatic Openers
The opener contains a sealed metal cylinder, filled with a special type of wax. This wax is the key to the opener’s functionality:
When the temperature rises, the wax absorbs heat and expands.
This expansion pushes against a small piston inside the cylinder.
The piston is connected to the greenhouse window or vent, which gradually opens as the pressure increases.
As fresh air flows in, the greenhouse cools naturally.
When the temperature drops, the process reverses:
The wax cools and contracts, releasing pressure on the piston.
A spring mechanism gently pulls the window or vent closed, helping retain warmth during cooler times of day.
One of the biggest advantages of automatic vent openers is that they don’t require electricity or batteries. They run entirely on the natural process of thermal expansion, making them both energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
This also means they’re reliable: no wiring, no solar panels, and no complicated systems that can fail. As long as temperatures fluctuate, the vent opener will do its job. The openers are also adjustable to temperatures – you can set them to open at a lower temperature or a slightly higher temperature, depending on what your preferences are.
Benefits for Gardeners
The consistent climate control keeps plants from overheating without manual adjustments. Auto openers can also be added to louvres, increasing ventilation throughout the greenhouse. There’s no need to rush out in a morning on a hot day to open vents, and no need to worry about closing them at night. They will simply fluctuate 24 hours a day without any input from you. They use no electricity, and many models are durable, working for years with minimal maintenance.
A Simple, Smart Solution
If you’re looking for a low-cost, reliable way to regulate temperatures in your greenhouse, an automatic vent opener is a must-have tool.
Makes & Models
We sell Elite auto openers, Halls & Juliana auto openers and Bayliss. The Bayliss brand has two types of opener; the XL and the MK7. We recommend the MK7 for bigger, heavier roof vents, such as those on an Elite Titan or similar. The XL is also universal, the cheaper of the models and very easy to fit.
Considerations
It is recommended that the cylinders be ‘disengaged’ during the winter months, or when a storm is expected – where the cylinder is removed and stored safely until the spring. This is very easy to do, a video being available of Lyndon showing how to do it here. As a word of warning, when you take the pin out, tie a bright piece of string to it – they are hard to find again once dropped!
